Local Efforts
You can help out when the nuns come to your area of the country – offer meals
or lodging, set up venues for them to teach, offer transportation or provide
retreat time. The best way to get involved with these efforts is to connect with
the Saranaloka board member who is coordinating your area and see what is
needed. Either email them directly (links below) or via the Contact page.
The San Francisco Bay Area has an e-list where visits and opportunities are
announced. And it also is the communication vehicle for the Bay Area
Saranaloka Supporters Group. The Group meets on a monthly (or so) basis,
generally in San Francisco or the East Bay to plan and discuss the next visit of
the nuns. Four sisters will be staying in the Bay Area in January and February
2009 and so there will be a lot of logistics to getting this set up. You can join
the e-list at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Saranaloka-BayArea/ . Two
Saranaloka board members, Jill Boone and Brenda Walsh, live in the Bay Area.
The next Supporters' Meeting is on May 25 in at the Insight Meditation Center in
Redwood City, CA. and will consist of a full day with Dhamma talk, meditation,
meal offering to the sisters, meeting, and possibly a hike.
The Pacific Northwest has a growing group of volunteers. If you are interested
in hooking up with them, please contact Janice Clark (Saranaloka board
member). For local Portland events, you can contact Junko Hayashi
(Saranaloka Treasurer).
The Central U.S. has benefited from visits by the nuns to Colorado, Oklahoma
and Michigan. Arpita Brown (Saranaloka board member) is the coordinator for
the Midwest region. Please contact her if you wish to be involved in any of the
Midwest states.
The East Coast will host the nuns in March 2009, starting with a retreat at the
Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts. There is a need for coordination
efforts and support for any engagements that would follow this retreat as well
as in the further future. You can contact Anne McKinsey (Saranaloka board
member) to offer assistance.
Outreach Committee
Join in the outreach efforts of Saranaloka. If you are interested in being a
contact for your area to distribute materials and info or if you have specific
skills that you want to offer such as graphics, printing or web support, please
get in touch! Since it is just starting up, you can help to develop a working
model for this virtual committee with members all across the U.S.
The objectives of the Outreach Committee are to coordinate efforts to let
people know of the existence of Saranaloka and its purpose, the upcoming
Founders Fund, and the nuns’ travel and community plans in the U.S.; to
develop and distribute materials to support these efforts; and to establish
networks and methods of keeping people informed (such as helping to create
a blog and/or email lists).
Founders Fund Committee
The Siladhara Community at Amaravati Monastery gave word in early April that
they do wish to proceed with founding a training monastery in the U.S. Once
we have their approval (most likely in late fall), the Founders Fund will be a
vehicle for people to offer dana specifically to support the establishment of a
new community. Right now, all contributions to Saranaloka are used to help
with operational expenses – bringing the nuns to America to teach and
supporting their winter visit. Please stay tuned for more information regarding
the Founders Fund Committee.
There are many ways to support the nuns in
America and we encourage you to help us to
support a future community here.
